The Defeat Diabetes Foundation is dedicated to spreading awareness about the risk factors, warning signs and complications of diabetes. This disease is one that many suffer from due to poor health and eating habits. This month, the Defeat Diabetes Foundation wants you to help them spread awareness and take action against this disease by giving ideas on how you can fight against it.
Now that spring has arrived, the weather will soon start to get warmer, and it’s the ideal time to start taking the steps toward a healthier lifestyle. If you get active and start eating healthier, you can reduce your risk of developing diabetes by as much as 55%!
Not sure where to start? We have a few ideas:
- Eat 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Try to incorporate fruits and veggies in every meal, and designate one day a week to try a new fruit or vegetable or create a new recipe out of your favorite healthy foods. If you make it fun, you’ll eventually make a habit out of incorporating these power foods into your diet.
- Eat 3 servings of whole grains daily. There seems to be this notion that all carbs are bad for you. This isn’t true. Your body NEEDS carbs for energy. What you need to stay away from is processed carbs found in white bread and white rice. Try substituting for brown rice and whole grain bread, and also try introducing foods like quinoa into your diet. They’re the “good” grains that won’t make you feel deprived.
- Work out for 30-60 minutes 5 days a week. Working out is tough, but it doesn’t have to be intense. Going on a 30 minute walk, taking up yoga, or spending 30 minutes on the elliptical will get you on the path to a healthier lifestyle. You’ll also feel better and have a lot more energy. Start small and easy and work your way up to something a bit more high impact. Even if you start with just 10 minutes a day, eventually working out will become a habit.
- Start changing up your habits. There are little ways to incorporate more physical activity and better eating habits into your day to day life without hitting the gym. Instead of the elevator, take the stairs. Park in the back of the parking lot so you have a farther walk. When you go out to eat, order what you want, eat half, and then take the other half home as leftovers. These are all doable, healthy habits that will put you on track to defeat diabetes.
The efforts of Defeat Diabetes revolve around ensuring people live a healthier lifestyle in order to prevent the disease from developing. This disease affects millions of people who have had to make significant lifestyle changes to remain healthy. These helpful tips are small steps that you can take to help lead a healthier lifestyle and “defeat” this disease.
