As we near summer’s end, walking season is quickly approaching. The months of September and October will be filled with walks for any number of causes, from breast cancer to autism to MS to Alzheimer’s disease. The goal of these walks is not just to raise money for research and the fight to a cure, although that is an important element. It’s also to help spread awareness and educate the public about each disease and its impact on people who suffer from it.
Alzheimer’s awareness walks are quickly approaching, and many of you might be interested in participating in one. Most of you might have a basic understanding of what Alzheimer’s is, but you may not know just how many people it impacts and how important it is to find a cure for this horrific disease. In order to help spread the word, we thought we’d share a few facts about Alzheimer’s:
- Alzheimer’s Disease is the sixth leading cause of the death in the United States.
- An estimated 5.2 Americans are known to have Alzheimer’s disease this year.
- One in three senior citizens die of Alzheimer’s or some other form of dementia.
- In 2012, about 15.4 million caregivers provided more than 17.5 billion hours of unpaid care to Alzheimer’s patients. This is equivalent to about $216 billion.
- Nearly 15% of caregivers for Alzheimer’s patients and patients with other forms of dementia are long-distance.
- Alzheimer’s disease costs the United States $203 billion dollars as of this year. By 2050, this number is expected to rise to $1.2 trillion.
These staggering statistics are just a few of the many reasons why you should do your part to take action and fight for a cure for Alzheimer’s disease! Sign up for your local walk, get some awesome Alzheimer’s awareness apparel, and do your part to spread awareness and fundraise for the cause. These patients need your help, as do their caregivers.
